Course Information

World History will take each student on a journey through time.  This class starts with the study of the beginnings of civilization and continues on to explore the development of major world religions, ancient empires, the Middle Ages of Europe, the Age of Exploration and the Renaissance and Reformation.

In this class we will focus on geography, economic organization, politics, law, war and diplomacy, technology, religion, philosophy, science, the arts, social relations and cross-cultural interaction.

These themes will lead us to an understanding of how cultural influences impacted societies.  We will learn to analyze how physical characteristics of the earth and human interaction with the environment have affected the development of societies, cultures and individuals.  We will also learn to analyze current events and we will learn how to use charts, graphs and maps to answer geographic questions.

These concepts will be presented in a variety of ways.  Students will be expected to read the chapter before the material is presented in class.  The material will be explained by the teacher through lecture, class discussion, guided reading strategies, video and various activities.

Assignments/Tests/Projects

Each student will be expected to take notes during lectures and videos and to take an active part in class discussions.  It will be necessary to study the information presented in order to be successful on quizzes, tests and activity assessments.

Late Work

All assignments are due the next day (or teacher assigned deadline).  Only ½ credit will be given for late work.  If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to ask for make- up work or notes.  One day, for each day absent, will be given to the student to make up work.

Grading

Students’ grades are based upon two common assessments and one final per semester, daily work and chapter tests/projects.

Student grades will be calculated as follows:

            Daily work = 25%

Chapter Tests and Projects = 45%

            Common Assessments = 20%
